Moniteau County commissioner only contested race

CALIFORNIA, Mo. - Moniteau County residents will decide only one local contested race on the Nov. 8 ballot.

As far as local races are concerned, only the race for Second District county commissioner has more than one candidate on the ballot. Incumbent Kim Roll, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Greg Robinson.

Roll, a lifelong resident of Moniteau County, has held the office for four terms. He said that experience will help him identify and initiate opportunities for improvement within the county.

"We have improved county roads, replacing multiple unsafe major bridge structures, numerous pipes and culverts in District 2," he said. "I have searched and received available grant money to benefit our county. I have made myself accessible to the residents of Moniteau County so that issues can be resolved in a timely manner."

Robinson, who has lived in Moniteau County for 37 years, said his work experience will help him as a commissioner. He worked as a motor-pool sergeant in the U.S. Army and opened a body shop after leaving the service. After seven years, he sold the shop and moved to California, where he bought the bowling alley. He operated the bowling alley for 27 years before selling it and working for Moniteau County Road and Bridge until his retirement eight years later.

For the last two years, Robinson has worked for three different excavation companies, learning more about roads, bridges and waterways, along with operating many types of heavy equipment.

"I have employed numerous people over the years and understand employee supervision along with managing a budget," he said.

The races for Moniteau County sheriff, First District county commissioner, county assessor, public administrator and coroner are uncontested.

In Statehouse races, incumbent state Rep. Caleb Jones, R-Columbia, is running unopposed in District 50. Incumbent state Rep. David Wood, R-Versailles, is being challenged by Democrat Travis Maupin in District 58.
