Lucas Knierim had every reason to be nervous, but in the end, he had no reason to be worried.
The Jamestown junior narrowly qualified for the finals of the shot put of the Class 1 state track and field championships held Friday at Adkins Stadium, but he still had some work to do earn a medal. Knierim, seeded ninth after the preliminaries, needed to move up one spot in order to reach the podium, with three throws remaining.
His second throw in the finals was the trick, traveling 43 feet, 5.25 inches. That distance bumped him three spots in the final results to finish sixth in the state, garnering an All-State honor.
"It felt a lot better than all the others," Knierim said. "A lot better."
Knierim's top throw may have felt better, but he still sat anxiously on the bench, waiting to hear the results after the finals had ended. It wasn't until then Knierim learned he jumped three spots to finish sixth in the state.
The nerves didn't set in during the competition, but Knierim felt jittery until the results were announced.
"I thought I was still in ninth," Knierim said. "I wasn't paying attention to the other throws. I was too nervous myself. On the last throw, when I started realizing I might not have made it, I started getting nervous."
Knierim won the District 5 title in the shot put easily and finished fourth in sectionals the following week. He admitted he was nervous during both districts and sectionals, but surprisingly, the nerves weren't there as he unloaded his six throws at state.
"I wish I could've stayed up instead of down, but honestly, as long as it got me here, that's what counts," Knierim said.
Knierim was the lone area All-State medalist Friday in Class 1. That list will likely grow today during the second day of the state track and field championships.
Jamestown senior Mickayla Strother finished seventh in the Class 1 girls 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 16.36 seconds. She qualified as one of the eight runners in today's finals of the event.
Chamois' Lucas Kuhn also advanced past the preliminary round in the Class 1 boys 300-meter hurdles. The senior hurdler took fifth place Friday with a time of 42.62 seconds and is scheduled to run in today's finals.
Through five of the 18 scheduled events, Rich Hill leads the Class 1 boys standings with 25 points.
Hardin-Central is in second place with 18, West Nodaway is third with 17 and Harrisburg, Stanberry and Zalma are tied in fourth with 10.
For the Class 1 girls, New Covenant Academy holds the lead in the team standings with 37 points after five events. New Haven is second with 23 points, followed by School of the Ozarks with 20, Liberal with 16 and Salisbury with 11.
