Jays, South Callaway receive top rankings in final baseball poll

Less than a week after winning the Class 5 state championship, the inevitable finally happened for the Jefferson City Jays.

The Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association released its final rankings of the 2017 season Friday, placing the Jays as the No. 1 team in Class 5 after finishing the season with a 31-2 record and their first state title since 1989.

Fort Zumwalt West finished second behind the Jays, while Vianney and Lee's Summit were third and fourth, respectively, in the final rankings.

Jefferson City wasn't the only area team to finish with a No. 1 ranking.

The South Callaway Bulldogs also received the top spot in the Class 3 rankings after winning the state championship, the team's first since 2012 when it was in Class 2.

South Callaway finished the season with a 28-5 record. The Bulldogs beat four of the top-10 teams in the final rankings during the state playoffs: No. 2 Valley Park, No. 4 Knob Noster, No. 5 Strafford and No. 9 Mountain Grove.

The Helias Crusaders came in at No. 5 in the final Class 4 rankings. Helias finished with an 18-7 record, losing to eventual state champion Aurora in the quarterfinals.

The Russellville Indians were placed at No. 6 in the Class 2 rankings after reaching the state quarterfinals. Russellville posted a 15-10 record, ending the season with a loss to Canton.

The St. Elizabeth Hornets were also No. 6 in Class 1 and reached the state quarterfinals as well. The Hornets won their second straight district title before losing to state runner-up Wellsville, ending the season at 13-7.

The Linn Wildcats also received votes in the Class 2 rankings, winning a district championship before losing to Russellville in the state sectionals. The Wildcats were 9-12.
