Jamestown baseball loses heartbreaker in district final

Six players named to all-conference team

The Jamestown Eagles nearly overcame a seven-run deficit, but their rally came up short in a 7-6 loss to the Pilot Grove Tigers in the Class 1 District 11 baseball championship game in Pilot Grove.

Jamestown finishes the season with an 11-7 record.

Trailing 7-0 after five innings, Jamestown scored three times in the sixth. Cole Thiessen hit a two-run double and Austin Maslen drove in another run with a double to cut the deficit to 7-3.

In the top of the seventh, Garrett Wolfe hit a bases-clearing double with one out to pull the Eagles within one run. Wolfe, representing the tying run, was at third base with one out, before Pilot Grove pitcher Brady Rentel got back-to-back infield popups to end the game.

Austin Flippin had two singles and two runs scored. Maslen finished with one triple and one double, Thiessen had two doubles and Wolfe added one single and one double. Clark Rohrbach and Nick Perez each had one single.

Wolfe was the losing pitcher for Jamestown, allowing five runs on four hits with six walks and nine strikeouts. Thiessen pitched two innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out three.

The CCAA released its all-conference team Monday, honoring six Jamestown players. Wolfe highlighted the all-conference list, earning Most Valuable Player honors.

Flippin and Thiessen were first-team honorees, while Perez, Rohrbach and Brandon Thompson each were honorable mentions.
