Russellville baseball falls in quarterfinals

CANTON, Mo. - For the second time in five seasons, the Russellville Indians had their baseball season ended in the Class 2 state quarterfinals by the Canton Tigers.

Canton led from start to finish Wednesday, topping the Indians 15-5 in six innings.

Russellville ends the season with a 15-10 record.

The Tigers led 4-0 in the bottom of the second before the game was delayed for nearly two hours by rain. Once play resumed, Canton hit a grand slam to double its lead to 8-0.

Matt Miller hit a three-run home run in the third inning to put Russellville on the board, but the Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 13-3.

Russellville extended the game in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run by Austin Roe to make the score 13-5. Canton scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by run rule.

Roe and Miller each had two hits. Nick Thompson and Mason Stewart each went 2-for-4 and Tyler Voss and Braden Hickey each finished 1-for-3 at the plate.

Thompson took the loss for the Indians, allowing seven runs on five hits in 11/3 innings. He walked four and struck out one.

Cory Minor came in to pitch after Thompson, giving up five runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning while finishing with two walks and one strikeouts. Trenton Morrow pitched the final three-plus innings, striking out four and walking two. He allowed three runs on four hits.

Canton (19-4), ranked No. 8 in Class 2, will play St. Vincent (12-10) in the Class 2 semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Car Shield Field in O'Fallon. No. 2 Mansfield (19-2) and No. 3 Lincoln (27-1) will play in the other semifinal game at 6:30 p.m.
