MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonathan Villar's single drove in Kurt Nieuwenhuis from second base with two outs in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Friday night.

Villar's hit, off Seung Hwan Oh, got past a diving Greg Garcia, the Cardinals third baseman. Left fielder Tommy Pham's throw to the plate was on line and Yadier Molina slapped a quick tag on Nieuwenhuis as he slid. The home plate umpire ruled Nieuwenhuis safe, leading to an immediate argument from Molina.

The call was confirmed after a brief review.

Chris Carter gave Milwaukee an early lead with a towering home run leading off the second off St. Louis starter Michael Wacha, who left in the seventh inning after being struck on the lower right leg by a low liner by Villar.

The Cardinals took the lead in the third on consecutive run-scoring singles by Aledmys Diaz and Matt Holliday.

The Brewers regained the lead in the sixth on back-to-back home runs by Jonathan Lucroy and Carter.

A leadoff home run by Molina in the eight off Brewers reliever Will Smith tied the game.

Nieuwenhuis led off the ninth with a walk off Trevor Rosenthal (2-4). He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hernan Perez.

Jeremy Jeffres (2-4) picked up the win in relief.
