MONTREAL (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom scored in the third period, helping the Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Saturday.

Jay Beagle and Andre Burakovsky also scored for the NHL-leading Capitals. Braden Holtby stopped 20 shots.

Washington improved to 12-0-2 in its last 14 games at Montreal. The Capitals' last regulation loss at Bell Centre was on Jan. 10, 2009.

Alexander Radulov and Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal, and Carey Price made 27 saves.

With the Capitals leading 2-1 and Radulov in the box for hooking, Backstrom scored his 15th of the season at 5:16 of the third.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, BRUINS 5

BOSTON (AP) - William Nylander got his first career hat trick, James van Riemsdyk scored his second of the game to break a tie with 1:36 left and Toronto snapped a three-game losing streak.

Connor Brown also scored for Toronto, which moved one point behind Boston for third place in the Atlantic Division. The Maple Leafs have played five fewer games than the Bruins.

David Pastrnak scored two goals for Boston, and Ryan Spooner, Patrice Bergeron and Torey Krug each added one. Bergeron and Krug had power-play goals.

Frederik Andersen stopped 36 shots for the Maple Leafs.

Goaltender Tuukka Rask, playing his 12th consecutive game, was pulled after the Maple Leafs' fourth goal. Zane McIntyre made 10 saves in relief.

WILD 6, CANUCKS 3

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Mikael Granlund got his first career hat trick, helping Minnesota beat Vancouver.

Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise and Mike Reilly also scored for the Western Conference-leading Wild, who bounced back after a 5-1 loss in Calgary on Wednesday. Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves.

Brandon Sutter had two goals and Bo Horvat also scored for the Canucks, who have lost three straight heading into a six-game road swing. Vancouver is five points back of the Flames for the final wild-card spot in the West.

Canucks goalie Ryan Miller made 33 saves.

PENGUINS 4, BLUES 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 22 shots and Pittsburgh beat St. Louis.

Kris Letang and Justin Schultz also scored for the Penguins who are 20-2-2 when Crosby scores a goal.

Patrik Berglund scored for St. Louis, which handed new coach Mike Yeo his first loss following a win in his debut on Thursday after replacing the fired Ken Hitchcock.

Jake Allen made 27 saves while falling to 18-14-3. He has not won back-to-back games since winning four straight from Nov. 26 through Dec. 6.

Fleury, making his first appearance since Jan. 14, earned his first win since winning five straight from Dec. 23 through Jan. 8.

BLACKHAWKS 5, STARS 3

DALLAS (AP) - Trevor van Riemsdyk put in a rebound with 4:03 left to lift Chicago over Dallas.

Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped a close-range shot by Artem Anisimov, but van Riemsdyk followed to put the puck under Lehtonen and make it 4-3. Jonathan Toews added an empty-net goal in the final second.

The third period of this one was dominated by scoring stars. Goals by Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin gave the Stars a 3-2 lead at 9:24, but Chicago's Patrick Kane tied the game just 35 seconds after Seguin scored.

Radek Faksa also scored for Dallas, and Lehtonen made 31 saves.

Corey Crawford stopped 31 shots for Chicago and is 4-0 against Dallas this season. Ryan Hartman and Gustav Forsling scored in the second period for the Blackhawks.

KINGS 1, FLYERS 0, OT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Peter Budaj posted his NHL-leading seventh shutout, Jeff Carter scored midway through overtime and Los Angeles won its fifth in a row.

Budaj, who wasn't even on the Kings' roster on opening night, extended his shutout streak to 144 minutes, 5 seconds. He made 17 saves.

Anze Kopitar set up the winning goal at 2:35 with a backhand pass across the crease to Carter, who whizzed a wrist shot past Michal Neuvirth. It was Carter's 27th goal of the season.

Neuvirth made 27 saves for Philadelphia, including a sensational glove stop in the second period.

COYOTES 3, SHARKS 2, SO

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Mike Smith stopped Joe Pavelski in the third round of the shootout to preserve Arizona's victory over San Jose.

Smith finished with 38 saves through overtime, including six during a power play in the extra period.

Brendan Perlini and Radim Vrbata scored in the tiebreaker for Arizona, and Logan Couture broke through for San Jose.

Shan Doan and Ryan White scored in regulation for the Coyotes, who snapped a two-game skid.

Brendan Dillon and Couture scored and Martin Jones finished with 26 saves for the Sharks, who had won eight of nine.

LIGHTNING 3, DUCKS 2, SO

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Brian Boyle scored in the fourth round of the shootout and Tampa Bay beat Anaheim.

Jonathan Drouin and Alex Killorn scored in regulation, Nikita Kucherov had two assists and Ben Bishop made 14 saves for the Lightning, who won the shootout 3-2 and improved to 4-9-2 over the last 15 games.

Brandon Montour and Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who are 0-1-1 on a 14-day, six-game road trip. Jonathan Bernier stopped 35 shots, and Ryan Kesler picked up two assists.

Getzlaf got the Ducks even at 2 from the right circle 4:02 into the third.

DEVILS 5, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Taylor Hall scored twice, Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist and New Jersey beat Columbus.

Jacob Josefson and Seth Helgeson also scored and Cory Schneider had 31 saves for the Devils, who won their sixth straight road game.

The Blue Jackets dropped the second game of a back-to-back after losing to Pittsburgh in overtime on Friday night. They are 6-8-1 since their franchise record 16-game winning streak and were out of sync for most of the game on Saturday.

Matt Calvert scored for Columbus in the third period, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 shots.

HURRICANES 5, ISLANDERS 4, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Ron Hainsey's second goal of the game at 2:08 of overtime lifted Carolina over New York.

Jacob Slavin, Lee Stempniak and Teuvo Teravainen also scored to help Carolina win its third straight since the All-Star Break. Cam Ward made 33 saves.

Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas, Brock Nelson and Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders, who are 6-1-2 in their last nine games. Jean-Francois Berube gave up all five Hurricanes goals on 25 shots.

Carolina pulled four points behind Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference's second wild-card spot. The Islanders, who also lost 5-4 at Detroit on Friday night, are one point behind the Hurricanes.

RED WINGS 1, PREDATORS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Petr Mrazek made 42 saves, Mike Green scored in the first period and Detroit beat Nashville.

Pekka Rinne made 18 saves for Nashville, which has lost two of three.

Mrazek is 5-0-0 in his career against Nashville. He made nine saves in the first, 16 in the second and 17 in the third to record his first shutout of the season and 10th of his career. He has been the goaltender of record in both of Detroit's wins over the Predators this season. The first came in Detroit on Oct. 21, in which several Predators could not finish the game due to a bout of food poisoning.

Green scored with 1:30 left in the opening period.

SABRES 4, SENATORS 0

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Robin Lehner made 37 saves, Kyle Okposo scored his 16th goal and Buffalo beat Ottawa to snap a three-game skid.

The Sabres also got goals from Ryan O'Reilly, Sam Reinhart and Marcus Foligno. Jack Eichel had two assists.

Lehner got his fourth career shutout and first this season. His first two came with the Senators, who traded him to Buffalo before last season.

Mike Condon allowed four goals on 25 shots before getting pulled in the third period. The Senators have lost four of six.

AVALANCHE 5, JETS 2

DENVER (AP) - Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist, leading the Avalanche to a rare win.

Matt Nieto scored twice and Matt Duchene added three assists, helping Colorado stop a nine-game losing streak. Nathan MacKinnon and Carl Soderberg also scored, and Calvin Pickard had 23 saves.

Colorado improved to 5-24-2 in its last 31 games. It also snapped a five-game skid at Pepsi Center, where it is 6-18-1 overall.

Adam Lowry scored each of Winnipeg's goals, stopping a 21-game drought. The Jets had won three in a row.
