California baseball beats Jamestown

The California Pintos won their second straight game after defeating the Jamestown Eagles 12-3 on April 9.

The Pintos (6-3) scored at least one run in all but one inning in the game. California scored 12 runs on eight hits and had two errors. Jamestown (2-5) scored three runs on three hits and had five errors.

Jamestown took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but California would answer with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.

Jamestown cut the lead to one run after a walk and two errors by the Pintos allowed a run to score and make it 3-2. The Eagles would be in position to tie the game as they had the bases loaded with two outs, but Tristan Jones struck out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Pintos loaded the bases thanks to two walks and an error by the Eagles. The Pintos would then score when Gabe Bailey hit a ball to third base, but another error by the Eagles allowed a run to score to make it 4-2.

It would stay 4-2 until the bottom of the fourth inning when California added two runs to make it a 6-2 game.

Jamestown made it a 6-3 game when William Lieser hit a sac fly with the bases loaded. Jamestown kept the inning going when Gage Reynolds struck out but was able to beat the throw to first base with two outs. California was able to get out of the inning without letting another run score.

California's defense made a few mistakes in the game.

"We just need to be more mindful of the game situation and know that we have to get an out when we need outs," head coach Steven Stock said.

Even with the defensive mistakes, the team did not allow Jamestown to have a big inning on offense.

"Getting out of innings by allowing only one or two runs means we are always in the game and have a chance to win," Stock said. "Big innings can really get you down and make it tough to catch up."

The Pintos were able to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored five runs in the inning to make it a 11-3 game. Hayden Green hit a two RBI double to make it a 7-3 game. Two batters later, with the Pintos having two runners on base, Lucas Ash hit a two RBI single to make it a 9-3 game. Kraig Walker and Tagen Higgins both added one RBI for the Pintos to make it 11-3.

The Pintos' adjustments at the plate was a reason for the team's success.

"Offensively our guys made some adjustments and put the ball in play rather than striking out. Many of these balls in play turned into hits which resulted in scoring runs," Stock said.

Walker and Bailey led the Pintos with two hits each. Lucas Ash had a team high three RBI, while Walker and Bailey both added two RBIs for the Pintos.

Calen Kruger pitched 3.1 innings for California and struck out three batters. Bailey pitched 2.1 innings and also struck out three batters.

Tristan Jones led Jamestown with two hits. Dalton Orely pitched 2.1 innings for Jamestown and struck out three batters.

California held Jamestown scoreless in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. The Pintos added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
