It took no time for the California JV Pintos girls basketball team to get going at its game Jan. 24. The team won 58-13 against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers.

California won the opening tip and scored right off the bat.

The first shot of the night was made by Lauren Hill. Less than two minutes into the first quarter, the Pintos were up 6-0. At the 42 second mark Rylee Hees stole the ball and went down for a layup making the score 17-2 at the end of the first quarter.

The team was aggressive on defense the whole game. "We are a pressure zone into a man defense; we played that all night. Our girls really dig in and guard people on defense. It's fun to watch them," JV coach Mikel Gragg said.

California started off the second quarter with a 3-pointer made by Emma Heather. At the end of the first half, the Pintos led 31-7.

Hees and Bailey Lage were on a roll with stealing the ball in the second half of the game. California took a 48-11 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Hill finished the game as the top scorer with a total of 14 points while Hees had 12 points and Lage had eight points.

The Pintos won the game with a final score of 58-13.

"I liked the outcome of the game," Gragg said. "We did several things well and also got to work on a few other aspects of the game that we needed to. Overall, it was a good night for us."
