Norman J. Steinhauer

Norman J. Steinhauer, 91, of Springfield, MO passed away on Saturday, August 3 at Mercy Hospital. He was born on August 3, 1922 to John and Frieda Steinhauer and grew up on the family farm in central Missouri north of McGirk. He married Esther Marie Bieri on October 7, 1950. Norman graduated from California High School, California, MO in 1940 and was class valedictorian. He started his career as bookkeeper for Moniteau Woolen Mills in California, MO. A few years later he was employed by Gerbes Super Markets in Tipton, MO as their head bookkeeper. In the late 70's he was transferred to the Springfield, MO regional office for Dillons/Gerbes Supermarkets and retired after 33 years with the company. He was active in his church life at both California United Church of Christ and St. John's Chapel United Church of Christ, Springfield, serving many years on the Church Council, teaching Sunday School and a member of the Men's Brotherhood. He and Esther enjoyed traveling throughout the United States before his health declined. He was a skilled woodworker and carpenter as well as all-around handyman and mechanic. He had a very analytical mind and loved to read and do research. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Moore. Survivors include his wife Esther; two brothers, Raymond and Hugh; children, Tom, Johna and Alan, Diane, Dave and Michelle and two grandchildren, Marina and Dane. He is also survived by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Chapel United Church of Christ, 4344 S. Fremont, Springfield, MO at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. There will be a visitation at the church preceding the service from 10:00 a.m. until the service. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the California UCC Church Cemetery in California, MO with the Reverend Andrew Lewis officiating.
