Emery Lee Northway

Mr. Emery Lee Northway, age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Lee was born on December 17, 1927 in Callaway County, Mo. a son of Leonard Ellis and Ruby Fay Vaughn Northway. He was married in 1954 to Nancy Roth in Iowa. On March 4, 1995, he married LaVerne Snellen in Hermann, Mo. A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Lee was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson City High School. He served in the United States Navy during the recovery of World War II as a First Class Seaman. Lee was a sheet metal worker for over ten years with the Sheet Metal Workers Local #36 at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant. Lee was also a plumber in Jefferson City and in the 1950's co-owned a repair and gas station, which helped lead to his ability to design and use a carburetor that would get him and his buddies to the Callaway Power Plant and back on one full gallon of gas in a milk jug. His true passion was working with his hands. He could fix any plumbing, electrical, or carpentry problem. Lee enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and antiquing. He always cherished time with his family and especially loved to dance with his wife. In his free time he would go camping and always had a project to keep him busy. Survivors include: his wife, LaVerne Northway; two sons, Jerry Lee Northway and his wife Sara of Alabama and Tommy Lee Northway and his wife Amy of Jefferson City, Mo; one step-son, Wayne Snellen of Brick, New Jersey; one step-daughter, Connie Kirchner of Jefferson City, Mo; three grandchildren, Dino Northway, Candy Northway and Jessica Northway; four step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Jimmy Lee Northway and Danny Lee Northway; one granddaughter, Sarah Marie Northway; and one brother, Leonard Ellis Northway, Jr. A memorial service was conducted Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Ted J. Herron Elderly Facility, Jefferson City, Mo. 65109 with Brother Bud Nichols officiating. Private graveside services and interment with military honors were held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hartsburg, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Clarke Senior Nutrition Center, 1310 Linden Dr., Jefferson City, Mo. 65109.
