Marjorie H. Scovill, 91, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away May 17, 2014, following a short illness. A long-time resident of Merriam, Kansas, Marjorie Faye Hofstetter was born December 4, 1922, in Latham, Missouri, to Stella Pearl (Tyree) Hofstetter and Harvey Delbert Hofstetter, the second of four children. Following graduation from Latham High School, Marjorie was awarded a scholarship to Central Missouri Teachers College in Warrensburg, Missouri (University of Central Missouri). After only one year of college, she accepted her first teaching position, while continuing her education, eventually earning her Bachelor of Science degree and teaching certificate. For 44 years Marjorie dedicated herself to teaching young children, 39 of those years in the Kansas City, Missouri school system. By taking continuing education courses she attained the equivalent of a Master's Degree. Throughout her life she had a remarkable number of interests and talents including travel, ballroom dancing, square dancing, painting, sewing crafts, scrapbooking, music, poetry, gardening, and church volunteer activities. She will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her gentle, kind and generous spirit. Marjorie was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Lee (Hofstetter) McDonald; her niece, Judy (McDonald) Hutchison, and her nephew, Jim McDonald. Marjorie is survived by her sister, Kathryn Lorine Hays; her brother, James Richard Hofstetter, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Services will be held at the Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, 100 South Oak Street, California, Missouri 65018 on Saturday May 24, visitation at 1:00 and service at 2:00. Graveside service will be at Latham Cemetery in Latham, Missouri. Condolence messages may be shared at www.bowlincantriel.com by signing the guest book in her obituary.
