Velma Jane Sommerer

Mrs. Velma Jane Sommerer, 64, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia, Mo. Jane was born on May 11, 1951, in King City, Mo., the daughter of Russell Eldon and Hattie Bell (Hutchcraft) Deaton. She was married on December 28, 1984, in Honey Creek, Mo., to Alfred Sommerer. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Jane graduated from California High School. She was employed with the Missouri Department of Social Services in data processing support services for over 34 years. After retirement, Jane enjoyed helping with children and rocking babies at her daughter's preschool center, Children's Garden of Knowledge. All the kids knew her as "Nana Jane." She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Honey Creek Women's Bible Study. She also volunteered at Calvary's Gift. Jane enjoyed traveling, cross stitching, doing puzzles, spending time outdoors and watching Wheel of Fortune and NCIS. She liked visiting and collecting lighthouses. Her favorite holiday was Christmas because she loved the decorating, and shopping all year round for family. Her main passion was being with her grandchildren, cooking for them and supporting them through sporting events and school activities. Survivors include: her husband of 31 years, Alfred Sommerer of Jefferson City, Mo.; her daughters, Amy (Chris) Sneller of Jefferson City, Mo., and Angie (Keith) Kliethermes of St. Martins, Mo.; her mother, Hattie Deaton of Jefferson City, Mo.; her brother, Orren (Linda) Deaton of Centertown, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Christopher Sneller, Garrett Sneller, Kaitlynn Sneller, Faith Sneller, Jacob Kliethermes and Kaylee Kliethermes. She was preceded in death by her father and infant brother. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Honey Creek, Mo. with the Reverend Jeffrey Schanbacher officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Calvary Lutheran High School.
