CHS tracksters aim high

"We want to finish as a team as high as we can in conference and districts and qualify as many as we can for the state meet," California High School Varsity Track Coach Rick Edwards said of the 2014 season. "Our goal is to keep improving each meet."

With a number of returning letter winners, Edwards said the key to a successful season is to develop the talent the team has and to stay healthy.

"On the boys' side, our throwers should score us good points," he said. "We have a couple of strong sprinters which translates to good jumpers and our distance in Adam Burkett should do well. On the girls' side, I think we should have two solid hurdlers and Katie Imhoff is back for our distance."

Edwards said there are some freshmen who will be key to both the boys' and girls' program this season.

The CHS track team started off the 2014 season at the UCM indoor track meet Monday, and will participate in the Warrensburg High School Relays beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Assistant coaches are Rich Matzes, Jon Lindquist and Rhiannon Kendrick.

"We have four home meets, which we are looking forward to hosting," Edwards said.

The California Open will be held April 15, and the California Invitational April 29. The California Guy Rush Memorial will be held May 1, with the California Open to follow May 9.
