Tipton School Board receives summer school update

There have been 160 to 170 students in average daily attendance at the Tipton R-VI summer school program. The information was presented to the board at the June 15 meeting held at the Board of Education Office.

The 19-day program offered "an enriching curriculum focusing on Reading, Writing, Math, Communication Arts and many different activities." It ran from May 26 to June 19, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Originally, there were 179 students enrolled, but at least 10 more finally took part.

There were 43 kindergartners and two teachers; 27 first graders and two teachers; 64 second and third graders, with three teachers; and 55 fourth through sixth graders, with three teachers.

The board approved several bids relating to the asphalt and drainage projects, and a six-month technology needs bid from Midwest Computech, beginning July 1 and ending Dec. 31.

Superintendent Scott Jarvis discussed the bus transportation issues, noting that one bid was received to get an idea of what it would cost to outsource the bus transportation system. The district will continue to operate its own bus system at this point. He also mentioned that the district achieved 100 percent approval at the most recent state bus inspection.

Jarvis presented an update on several items related to the bond issue work. The gym roof and floor work was discussed along with the need for a Genie Lift for use in both gyms. The board also was presented with library reports.
