Coach: Lady Pintos' season showed "heart,' "dedication'

The 14-13 record the California girls basketball team finished this season with may not reflect how good it actually was.

However, the record may reflect how tough the Lady Pintos' schedule was and the ups and downs the team faced this season.

Six of California's games were against teams that finished the season ranked.

The Lady Pintos went 1-5 in those games, but two of the losses were by only three points.

"We didn't have any nights off," Lady Pintos coach Bobby Sangster said. "We played a lot of good basketball teams. Tipton early in the year was one of our big games, big blowouts. They've won 20 games this year. That's just the type of competition we've played this year. It's been very, very good for us because we've grown a lot."

The victory against the Lady Cardinals was by 48 points in the second game of the season.

In the fifth game of the season, California hosted Southern Boone, which is ranked No. 4 in Class 3, losing 69-45.

The Lady Pintos lost by 21 to Southern Boone in the Tri-County Conference Tournament, but only lost 52-42 to the Lady Eagles in the district semifinals.

"I'm very, very proud of the girls' effort. I'm very, very proud of their hart, their desire, their dedication," Sangster said following the game. "This time of year if you don't play your best basketball, you go home. We didn't play our best game tonight, so we've got to take that long bus trip home."

The other losses to ranked teams were a 44-41 home loss to Skyline, which is No. 3 in Class 2, and a 62-59 defeat at School of the Osage, which is ranked No. 5 in Class 4.

The Lady Pintos did pull off an upset against then-No. 1 in Class 4 Carl Junction in the Eldon Tournament, winning 38-33. Carl Junction is now ranked No. 4.

Next season's Lady Pintos will be replacing five seniors, including regular starters Mara Caudel and Ashtyn Goans.

"They are a very special group of girls," Sangster said. "They are always going to have a very special place in Lady Pinto basketball history. I'm just proud and very lucky that I was able to coach them for the last four years."

California could have as many as seven players returning next season, including leading scorer Elizabeth Lutz.

"We're going to get better; we're going to keep battling," Sangster said. "We've got a really good group coming back, and I'll be excited to see how much work we can do over the summer and see what we can do next year."
