After receiving word from her children and grandchildren that they were going to surprise her husband for his 85th birthday, Ruth Coale became delighted every time she heard a car horn honk outside her house.

Setting up a large happy birthday display for her husband, Jerry Coale, in the couple's front yard, the signs asked neighbors and passers-by to honk their horns in honor of Grandpa Coale's latest achievement.

Ruth Coale made sure to keep the secret hidden from Jerry as long as she could. She said she wanted to be able to get his face on camera when the time finally came to reveal what her family had done for him.

Jerry was completely unaware of the generous act waiting for him in his yard. He said the only thing he could ask was why so many people seemed to be honking their car horns so loud outside throughout the entire day.

Eventually, the surprise was revealed, and it was clear he couldn't have been happier. He said that the experience was a "shocker" for him, but it was more than flattering to see all the effort that had been put in by his children and grandchildren.

After taking a few photos, the couple entered back inside the home to reflect upon the past and just how special life has been to him throughout the years. Jerry said turning 85 made him realize just how lucky and fortunate he is to have lived as long as he has.

"I never dreamed that I'd live to be this old," Jerry said. "All the men on my father's side had died young men, including my father. And all I can say is thank goodness I took after my mother."

Ruth said the signs were a good surprise, and she is so thankful for her family for doing so. She was even impressed with the little markings and logos placed on the signs which signified Jerry's love of motorcycles and his history as a veteran.

He entered the Air Force in 1956 when was a young man and his time there would go on to lead him to various different career paths in the military. After Jerry had moved away from his career in the Air Force, he had decided to enlist in the National Guard when he was 54 years old.

To his surprise, he found himself within 16 months in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. In a moment of honesty, Jerry said he had never met as many as nice people as he did during his time in the National Guard.

Born and raised in California, the Coales expressed gratitude toward the people of California. While they had moved out of town during his years in the service, the two decided to move back home after Jerry felt like he needed a stable place to live due to his age.

The couple said they have been happy and content since they've moved back. After lbeing married 56 years and still going strong, Ruth said she is grateful to have the time together that they have.

Jerry added he is lucky man to have such a great family and wife who love him very much.
