The City of California could end its recycling program.

During its July 5 meeting, the City of California Board of Aldermen discussed the possibility of discontinuing the program.

Street Supervisor Vic Maurer told aldermen that collecting and sorting recyclables is difficult for city workers when residents do not correctly separate recyclables. He said crew members oftentimes find pools, slides and children's toys in residential recycling bins.

The program is a potential drag on California's sanitation budget. Recycling may be diverting revenue that could be used for maintenance of trash trucks.

Board members said they will further evaluate the issues surrounding recycling, before making a decision on cancellation of the program.

Maurer also provided the board with bids for asphalt overlay, but the board decided to table the issue until later.
