The California Nutrition Center put "fun" in fundraising with a card game tournament Friday night.

About 30 area residents tried their hand at Pitch, a popular trick-taking card game dating to the 17th century. The tournament was a fundraiser for the local nonprofit, which serves 80-100 people with meals and activities during the day.

Kim Drummond, administrator for the center, said it was the first time the nonprofit had hosted a pitch tournament, although many seniors who frequent the center often play the game there.

"Since we had never done it, we didn't expect large profits," Drummond said. "But it's not always about that. It's offering fun things to do for people, something a little different."

The top three players during the tournament won cash prizes of $50, $20 and $10 for first, second and third place, respectively. Quinten and Rita Potter, both of Clarksburg, finished first in the tournament. Ed and Anna Mae Schaefer, both of Jefferson City, came in second place, and Charlie Roll and Glenda Williams, both of California, finished third.

The remainder of the proceeds went directly to the nonprofit, which is why many showed up. Drummond said the center raised $200 from the event.

"I just like to get out and have a chance to help the organization, the nutrition center," Roll said.

Although only 15 teams participated in a space that can accommodate 48 teams (with two people per team), Drummond said she was happy with the turnout.

"This was mostly word of mouth and placement in a few community calendars," she said. "... We're happy with the turnout. It's not always about numbers, it's about the quality of the experience and just having something fun to do on the weekend."

While it was the first time, Drummond said it might not be the last time. She said the organization's board will consider bringing back the event in the future.

In addition to Leisa Hees, a volunteer who helped run the game, and Bill Worden, another volunteer, Drummond is thankful for the support from the community.

"The community has really supported us, especially during this time when groceries are so high and costs are high," she said. "... Anytime we need anything, people have been there."

VolkArt Leatherworks, a local manufacturer of leather products, donated the playing cards.

The California Nutrition Center provides free meals and activities to seniors 60 and older and their spouses. It provides lunch, both dine-in and curbside, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays. For more information, the center posts events and menus on its Facebook page and can be contacted at 573-796-4240.
