‘Wave ‘Em’ event to celebrate veterans

2018 FILE: Helias Catholic High School students Nick Schaben, left, and Alex Texreau hold an American flag during the 2018 Wave 'Em If You Got 'Em event. The event is held each year as a sign of appreciation to veterans as they make their way toward St. Martins Knights of Columbus for Veterans Appreciation Night.

Flags will line the route to Thursday's Operation Bugle Boy Veterans Appreciation Night in St. Martins.

Wave 'Em If You Have 'Em provides area residents the opportunity to showcase their appreciation for local military veterans, especially the main event's honored guests, members of "The Greatest Generation" who are World War II veterans.

Participants are encouraged to wave flags and hoist banners as a motorcade transporting the honored guests makes its way to the St. Martins Knights of Columbus Hall.

The motorcade will be leaving Candlewood Suites on Amazonas Drive at roughly 4:15 p.m. It will proceed up Amazonas, make a left to Truman Boulevard, a right on South Country Club, a right on Business 50 through Apache Flats, then a right on Route T to the Knights Hall in St. Martins.

Flag-wavers are encouraged to be safely along the route by 4 p.m.

The annual Veterans Appreciation Night includes a Thanksgiving-style meal, patriotic program, camaraderie and student volunteers. It is a free event for local military veterans and their guests; each veteran is welcomed to bring one guest. Tickets are required for the event, but there is a waiting list.
