At the Class 2 District 2 girls golf tournament Oct. 10, California Lady Pintos golf had two of their players qualify for the state tournament in Bolivar.

Anna Boyd, a freshman, took eighth place, while senior Anika Miller finished in 15th to advance.

California coach Ashley Atteberry said it was a great feeling to have two golfers qualify for state in California's first season competing in Class 2.

Weather was not the golfer's best friend at state. It was cold and windy both days, which caused problems throughout the competition.

On Day 1, Boyd had her difficulties and shot 102. On Day 2, Boyd stepped up her game and used her strength of hitting long drives to the fairway, which improved her performance. Boyd finished Day 2 with a score of 98 and moved up eight spots with an overall score of 200 to take 41st place.

"Even though we had a practice round on Sunday, on Monday with the drastic temperature change and probably nervousness on Anna's part, she scored a little higher than her average, but on the second day, the nerves weren't there as much so she was able to put together a better score. This course played to Anna's advantage as she can hit the ball a long way and this course had length to it so it fit her well," Atteberry said.

Miller had difficulties adapting to the conditions throughout the first day and struggled to get her game on track. Things were different on the second day for Miller and she had a more consistent performance. Miller shot 145 on Day 1 and 119 on Day 2 for an overall score of 264 to finish in 81st place.

"Anika had a rough first day due to the weather conditions, so she really struggled, but she was able to bounce back and not move up any places but played much better the second day," Atteberry said.

Atteberry has called the season one of the best she's had since coming to California. She described the 2022 season as a giant leap forward for her program and California will look to reach even greater heights in 2023.

"This has been one of our best seasons in the last several years. One big part of that is that we placed fourth in both our conference and our district," Atteberry said. "So I feel like we had more success as a team which is a great feeling."
