E.M. Burger Foundation awards $9,000 in scholarships

Four Central Missouri students received scholarships thanks to a California business.

The E.M. Burger Foundation awarded $9,000 in scholarships to nine students at three Burgers Specialty Foods locations. Each recipient of the 2022 Burger Empowerment Scholarship received a check for $1,000. Sara Rohrbach, a representative for the E.M. Burger Foundation, said the scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years, meaning a recipient can receive up to $4,000 total.

Recipients of the scholarship must have a parent or legal guardian employed by Burgers Specialty Foods full time. Rohrbach said additional requirements for the scholarship include a minimum 2.0 GPA, and recipients must be 24 years old or younger by the end of the calendar year the check was written in.

Four of the nine scholarships were awarded to Central Missouri recipients through the California location. One scholarship was awarded through the Burgers' Springfield location, and four additional scholarships through the Paris, Tennessee, location.

Rohrbach said this was the first class to receive the scholarships.

Recipients from the California location include:

  • Hunter Bookout, of California, who is attending the University of Central Missouri to study safety management.
  • Hailey Cain, of Centertown, who is attending the University of Missouri-Columbia to study nursing.
  • Yosemite Fernandez, of Holts Summit, who is attending Moberly Area Community College to study biological science.
  • Luis Manzo, of Clarksburg, who is attending Westminster College to study computer system analysis.
