California Pintos wrestling was back on the mat last weekend when they traveled to the Mexico Quad to take on North Callaway, Mexico, and Macon.
In their first match against North Callaway, the Pintos fell to the Thunderbirds 54-29. Sophomore Patrick Morrow (120 pounds), freshman Jose Martinez (126), and junior Alexis Anguiano (215) all won by fall.
California's second match of the quad was against the Mexico Bulldogs. The Pintos got off to good start as freshman Isaac McCarty (106) and Morrow won their matches. Although California closed out the match with wins from junior Austin Suen (150), Anguiano and senior DJ Schneider (285), Mexico edged California 48-30.
In their final dual, California defeated Macon 42-24. Patrick Morrow (120), Martinez (126) and freshman Jackson Barnard (132) won their matches.
Pintos coach John Heimann said California has been through a lot of difficult times this season due to injuries and inexperience. However, Heimann was pleased with the effort and progress the Pintos made Saturday and hopes the Mexico Quad will greatly help the Pintos get ready for the Class 1 District 2 tournament Feb. 17.
"I thought we wrestled well today. We were able to fight through some positions, that earlier in the year, we would have given up in. We're not where we would like to be at this point in time, but we are going in the right direction leading into districts," Heimann said.
