JAMESTOWN -- A Jefferson City man is behind bars after allegedly attempting to steal a car less than a day after his release from the Moniteau County Jail.

According to a Moniteau County Sheriff's Office news release, Brandon L. Higgins, 19, of Jefferson City, was arrested Friday on suspicion of first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle in Jamestown. The release said the arrest came after reports were received of a male subject entering a parked vehicle on School Street.

Witnesses told deputies the subject entered a residence on Row Street. The deputies then visited the residence, where they made contact with Higgins. He told deputies during questioning he was attempting to steal a vehicle, but fled with the keys when confronted.

The sheriff's office also discovered Higgins had just been released on bond from the Moniteau County Jail the night before. He was previously in custody for domestic assault and property damage.

Following his arrest, Higgins was returned to the jail and is being held with no bond.
