Former Jamestown resident dead at 59


JAMESTOWN, Mo. -- Word has been received here of the passing of former resident Melody Garnett Parry, 59, of Columbia, who passed away May 23 at BCJ Hospital in St. Louis. 

She attended elementary school here when her mother, Maxine, taught at Jamestown School and her father, Rodney Garnett, owned and operated what was previously Steiner's John Deere dealership on Mill Street. In addition to her father, Melody is survived by her husband, Fred Parry, of the home; two sons, Nick and Max; two sisters, Christy Garnett and Leanne Peace and husband, Jack; one brother, Scott Garnett; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will take place beginning at noon June 10 at Missouri United Methodist Church, 204 Ninth Street, Columbia, with a Celebration of Life and Homecoming at 2 p.m.

Gram's Get N Go

Dayna Coonce announced "summer hours" are beginning Monday, with Gram's Get N Go staying open until 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays until Labor Day. They will open at 6 a.m. and stop cooking at 6 p.m. Daily specials will still be offered.

Central Merc Coffeehouse

The grand opening of the new coffeehouse on the town square, Central Merc, was a real success Saturday. They will open at 7 a.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Student awards

Jamestown kindergarteners all received the Artsonia Portfolio Award, and Therin Meisenheimer and another unnamed kindergartener were awarded an Excellence in Art as Rec edition from the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) Student Show. Skylar Schoenthal won the Certificate in Art (for Exceptional Art Performance at the MAEA Student Show) Recognition and another unnamed student was recognized in the competition for Artsonia Popular Artist, Artsonia Rave Reviews and Artsonia Hall of Fame Award. Brantlee Hees received the Artsonia Rave Reviews. Thomas Cassil received the MAEA Student Show Recognition. Excellence in Computer Keyboarding went to Skylar Schoenthal and Therin Meisenheimer, while Remarkable Readers were recognized as Skylar Schoenthal and Cooper Wells. The Magnificent Mathematicians were Therin Meisenheimer and Alyssia Bondurant. An Outstanding Citizen Award was given to a kindergartener whose name could not be published.

Incredible Improvement awards were given to Eli Borts, Alyssia Bondurant and Aailyah Bondurant. Perfect Penmanship recognition awards were presented to Therin Meisenheimer and Brantlee Hees. Amazing Artist award went to Brantlee Hees and another student whose name was withheld from publication, who also was recognized as a Terrific Teammate. Paxton Phillips was given a Kindhearted Kid award. Thomas Cassil was given the Super Storyteller award while Riley Woods was recognized as the Cheerful Kid in the kindergarten class. Max Sedgwick was named Fantastic Friend; Helpful Hands awards were given to Skylar Schoenthal and Ryder Bondurant; Brantlee Hees was recognized as the Kind and Caring student; and Landon Marshall was given the Awesome Athlete award. Creative Cat recognition awards went to Eli Borts and Aailyah Bondurant.

Grace United Methodist Church

Sunday morning's worship service included observance of the Pentecost with gifts presented to the church by the church families. Blaze Hile performed acolyte duties. Beverly Tising Meyer, guest pianist, played a beautiful selection to opening the service. Pastor Don Almond gave the welcome and announcements followed by children's time led by Beverly Tising Meyer. Pastor Don led the Call to Worship after which the congregation sang "I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord." After a time of prayer, the hymn "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" was sung. The Scripture Reading was from Acts 2:1-21. Pastor Don's sermon was "Pentecost - A Birthday Celebration." The closing hymn was "Forward Through the Ages." Next Sunday will be the "Peace with Justice" offering. All are invited to have a Dutch-treat lunch together at Duncan's Diner in Prairie Home following Grace's UMC services and attend the Board meeting afterward at the Prairie Home UMC Fellowship Hall.
