Chris Scheppers, Dale Wheatley and Dennis Holliday worked Friday to make progress on the railroad mural being painted north of the railroad tracks at 405 S. Oak St. in California.

Holliday, a Jefferson City muralist, is overseeing work on the mural, which will depict California's railroad and transportation history.

Former California "mover and shaker" Gail Hughes conceptualized the installation with Holliday approximately six years ago. Despite working on many murals since -- including several around California, Holliday is finally working to make Hughes' dream a reality. Hughes' family is paying for the mural after his death earlier this year, and California Progress Inc. (CPI), donated $5,000 toward the installation. CPI will be responsible for maintaining the mural.

The mural's location offers a great view for passengers and crew on passing trains.

Oak St. Now, Holliday and volunteers are scaling up the concept for California's latest mural, which will honor California's railroad history. The mural is aptly located north of the railroad tracks on South Oak Street and will be seen by train passengers and crew passing by. California Progress Inc., donated $5,000 toward the mural, with Hughes' family paying the remainder.
