California wins three medals at Highway 13 Throwdown

California High School Wrestling took a road trip down to Higginsville to wrestle in the Highway 13 Throwdown.

The Lady Pintos wrestled first on Friday and won two second place medals.

In the 106-pound bracket, Camryn Wingate went 2-1 on the day and finished in second place. She won her first match by fall over Kinleigh Wilson, of Mid-Buchanan. She then won by a 4-2 decision over Aubrey Schaefer, of Blue Springs. But lost in the championship match by fall to Lillian McCleary, of Lone Jack.

In the 130-pound bracket, Bella Fulks went 1-1 on the day with a loss to Morgan Clubb, of Oak Grove by fall, and a win over Keeley Robinson, of Marshall, by a 16-1 technical fall.

In the 170-pound bracket, Ivy Scroggins went 2-1 on the day and finished in second place. Scroggins won her first two matches. She won by fall over Lexi Shloman, of Lafayette County, in the first round and then won by a 5-2 decision over Karalena Steinhauser, of Lexington. She lost in the championship match by fall to Alana Thelin, of Pleasant Hill.

In the 190-pound breacket, Ivee Cooper went 1-4 on the day. With losses to Jayda Stephan, of Eldon, by fall; Ceejae Hart, of Hickman, by fall; Mareli Andrade, of Marshall, by fall; and Kayleen Garejpy, of Sherwood, by fall. She won her final match over Maria Garcia, of Oak Park, by fall.

The Pintos took the mat the following day.

In the 106-pound bracket, Talyn Balsley went 3-1 on the day and came away with a third place finish. In the first round, he lost by fall to Bryson Dubes, of Centralia, but came back to win his last three matches. Balsley won by a 4-2 decision over Cruz Prieto, of Carrollton; by fall over Georgan Happy, of Richmond; and by a 14-4 major decision win over Avery Jackson, of Knob Noster.

In the 113-pound bracket, Connor Farmer went 2-2 on the day and finished in fourth place. He started the tournament with a 5-4 decision win over Trayton Hook, of Lone Jack. In the semifinals, he lost to Jesiah Simmons, of Eldon, by fall. He then won by fall over Wyatt Weekley, of Sherwood, and lost in the third place match to Waylon Adkisson, of Centralia, by fall.

In the 120-pound bracket, Isaac McCarty went 0-2 on the day with losses to Declan Cockrum, of Richmond, by fall and Kolten Kelso, of Sherwood, by fall.

In the 126-pound bracket, Patrick Morrow went 3-2 on the day. He won over John Beilbdrey, of Tipton, by fall; Emerson Young, of Macon by a 13-4 major decision win; and Caden Agcopra, of Sherwood, by fall. His two losses came against Noah Lovell, of Lone Jack, by fall and Tennison Nixdorf, of Penney by fall.

In the 132-pound bracket, Jose Martinez went 3-2 on the day. All three of his wins came by fall over Aydan Frerking, of Lafayette County; Carson Bretz, of Penney; and Jordan Rennison, of Carrollton. His two losses also came by fall to Dalton Doss, of Tipton, and Landon Wirtz, of Knob Noster.

In the 138-pound bracket, Daylen Yarnell went 0-2 on the day with losses to Kooper Matthews, of Penney, by 9-6 decision and Landon Willis, of Lafayette County, by fall.

In the 144-pound bracket, Jackson Barnard went 0-2 on the day with losses to Gabriel Provin, of Lathrop, and Joshua Taitano, of Knob Noster.

In the 150-pound bracket, Tristan Balsley went 2-2 on the day. His two win were by fall over Wyatt Aspey, of Sherwood, and Braxton Moser, of Carrollton. His losses came against Darren Todd, of Eldon, and Gabriel Baker, of Richmond.

In the 165-pound bracket, Kwynnon Duvall went 1-1 on the day with a win over Zander Pulliam, of Penney, by fall and a 9-3 desicion loss to Braxton Ernst, of Lafayette County.

In the 175-pound bracket, Cody Schneider went 0-2 with losses to Mason Covey, of Richmond, and Ryder Dalinghaus, of Lathrop.

In the 285-pound bracket, Alexis Anguiano went 1-2 on the day. He won by fall over Grant Pardoe, of Tipton. He lost to Travis Cardwell, of Richmond, and Cade Smith, of Centralia.

"The kids have improved greatly since the beginning of the season," California head coach Lance Fulks said. "They keep working hard and just keep improving every match. A couple freshmen stepped up this weekend and got some big wins for us. Excited to see how far they can go and for the future of Pinto wrestling."

California wrestles in two meets next week. The Pintos take to the mat at the Missouri Military Academy Varsity Colonel Classic. They will return home on Tuesday for the California Tri.
