No cellphone use at Jamestown school

JAMESTOWN, Mo. -The Jamestown School Board approved changes to the faculty and student handbooks at its Aug. 8 meeting.

After discussion, the board updated the cellphone policy, Superintendent Gretchen Guitard said.

"We still are not allowing cellphones to be out during the regular school day," Guitard said. "Kids can have them in their backpacks, and they can use them before school and after school, but from the first bell to the last bell they are not allowed to be out."

Students who violate the policy will have their phones taken until the end of the day, Guitard said. The second violation will require parents or guardians to pick up the cell phone. A third violation will result in after school detention.

"Lots of schools let kids use their phones during the day," Guitard said. "Some schools are trying to go back and say they can't use their phones, so we are just staying with what we have been doing."

In other business, the board approved the price of 2019-20 athletic passes, $35 for individuals and $75 for households. Community members may purchase passes at the front office.

The board also accepted a $6,350 air conditioner bid from Professional Medal Fabrications. The previous unit for the secondary classrooms was on its way out, Guitard said.

The next board meeting is 6 p.m. Sept. 12.
