Winter Weather Advisory issued for Tuesday evening

The National Weather Service in St. Louis has issued a Winter Weather Advisory affecting parts of Mid-Missouri starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, and extending through 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019.

For the third time in less than a week, the Mid-Missouri area finds itself under a Winter Weather Advisory.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service Office in St. Louis is predicting a 50 percent chance of snow, mainly after 4 p.m., in the Jefferson City area.

The NWS advises motorists to plan for slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions that could impact the Tuesday evening commute.

The Winter Weather Advisory - which includes Cole, Boone, Callaway, Moniteau and Osage counties, among others - is in effect from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday.

As the evening starts, snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain, is expected fall and then transition to freezing rain after approximately 3 a.m. The amount of ice accumulation is predicted to be less than a tenth of an inch, and snowfall could total 1-3 inches.

Patchy freezing rain is expected to continue through 9 a.m. Wednesday, followed by patchy drizzle through 1 p.m. before the system moves out of the area.

Local public works officials have been pre-treating roads throughout the day Tuesday with salt and chemicals.
