Speed limit reduced in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, Mo. - The Jamestown Board of Aldermen approved a speed limit reduction of 10 mph within city limits.

At the July 1 meeting, the board approved the change from 30 mph to 20 mph. Mayor Larry Borts said the city previously had an ordinance that was never posted or enforced to reduce the speed.

"The ordinance stated that any street that was not marked, the speed limit was 30 mph," Borts said. "Thirty mph on some of these streets here is way too fast."

Unless otherwise posted, the speed limit on non-marked streets was 20 mph, he said.

New signs will be posted at the four entrances to town on Missouri 87 and Missouri 179.

The city received complaints about speeding on School Street, which did not have speed limit signage. Board members approved a purchase from Missouri Vocational Enterprises of two signs for School Street at a cost of $87.

Signs will be installed before school begins Aug. 15 with a 15 mph speed limit from 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In other business, the board:

Heard Mayor Borts and City Clerk Dawn Cassil submitted financial reports to the state auditor June 29.

Received an update from City Attorney Charissa Mayes that the sales tax ordinance would be active in October.
