Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) met Feb. 18 to discuss substance abuse in California.

Laura Powell, prevention coordinator for Compass Health Network, was there to show the research that has been conducted on substance abuse and to get people talking about what can be done to help. Powell had those attending the meeting write down the concerns they had, the resources they knew of and any ideas they had to help spread the word about those resources.

Some concerns that were brought up were increased instances of substance abuse, vaping, underage drinking and mental health. With only a handful of resources being available in the county, some ideas thought to be effective were resource events at PTA meetings, starting a coalition, having different speakers at the schools and having activities to get the community's youth involved.

Powell is looking to continue meetings to get some of the ideas mentioned into action not only within the community but in the schools as well.
