Area FFA students earn placements at state convention

Area FFA participants earned placements in a number of events at Missouri FFA's 93rd annual state convention April 30 and May 1 on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia.

California High School's FFA saw both an event team and an individual place in one event each - parliamentary procedure and extemporaneous public speaking.

The California FFA Chapter placed third in the parliamentary procedure leadership development event. The team for the event is comprised of Megan VanLoo, Johnny Gercia, Camryn Schlup, Lauren Hill, Sydney Percival and Dawson Gump.

Grand River Technical School sponsors the state event, which consists of both a written test and a demonstration that tests the team's knowledge of parliamentary law based on Robert's Rules of Order.

Individually, Ella Lewis, of the California FFA Chapter, placed sixth in the extemporaneous public speaking leadership development event. Sixteen students from six districts were selected to compete at the state level.

MFA Inc. sponsors the competition, which requires contestants to deliver a speech based on one of three agricultural topics. Participants have 30 minutes to prepare their four- to six-minute speeches. An additional five minutes of questions are included as a part of the overall competition. The event helps students to polish logical thinking and verbal skills needed in the classroom.
