Annual lighting contest about ready to kick off

Joe and Dena Blakely are known in California as "The Christmas Lights People," a nickname that serves them well. Their home on Highway 87 has been shining bright each Christmas season for several years, which is a habit he does not plan on ending. (December 2018 file photo)

The California Area Chamber of Commerce's Annual Christmas Lighting/Decorating contest will be the week of Dec. 9-13.

Businesses are also encouraged to decorate. The winner of this contest will receive the traveling Santa Trophy. Prizes will be awarded to three winners in the business and home categories. All businesses will be judged, including those displayed at Proctor Park.

Homes within the California city limits will be judged between 6-9 p.m. from Dec. 9-13; homes that wish to be judged should make sure to have their lights on each evening during this window. Residents with a rural address who wish to be judged must pre-enter by Monday.

All homes in the city limits will be judged, but the Chamber requests that residents call the office at 573-796-3040 by Monday to guarantee judging. The Chamber office can also be reached via email at [email protected], or visited at city hall during its office hours of 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.
