Conservation to host prescribed burn workshop

Landowners can learn to use prescribed fire as a land management tool at a Prescribed Burn Workshop presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Jamestown Area Community Center.

Prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation. However, fire can be dangerous and ineffective when not used properly. This workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for grassland management.

Lunch and water will be provided during the workshop. Additionally, a hands-on burn in the afternoon will be demonstrated if weather permits, so please dress accordingly. Leather gloves and boots will be required for participants on the fire line.

Those interested in the workshop must sign up online at mdc.mo.gov. From the website, click on the events tab and search by county (Moniteau), or go directly to the event at https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/171232. All registrants for the event must be a minimum age of 16 years old by Feb. 1. For more information about the workshop, contact MDC Private Land Conservationist Dean Stucker at 573-796-0286, ext. 4282.
