Sheriff clarifies ICE operation

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency agents conducted an operation last Sunday in California - Moniteau County Sheriff's Office deputies did not make any contacts or act on behalf of ICE, Sheriff Tony Wheatley said.

Wheatley said in a post on the Sheriff's Department Facebook page yesterday ICE agents did ask for assistance to act as backup during their operation if they needed it, and one deputy shadowed the agents from across the street. However, deputies did not participate with ICE's contact with businesses along Buchanan Street.

Wheatley clarified while an individual was pulled over for a routine traffic stop nearby - they were using a cell phone to film the ICE agents and their vehicle was swerving over the center line of the roadway on Buchanan Street - and an ICE agent made contact before the subject was released, the deputy did not pull over the individual on behalf of ICE.
