California boys take second behind Southern Boone

The California girls track and field team finished 1-2 in three different field events on the way to scoring 165 points and claiming the team title on home track April 25.

The Lady Pintos earned a comfortable team victory as Southern Boone took second with 131 points. Versailles was third with 128, North Callaway was fourth with 106. Boonville took fifth with 67 points, New Bloomfield came in sixth with 62, Tipton was seventh with 49 and Green Ridge rounded out the scoring with a team score of 15.

Audrey Pickering won the shot put with a mark of 41-03.75, while Cameron Meyer took second with a 36-07.5. The two swapped places in the discus, as Meyer won with a throw of 127-03 and Pickering was the runner-up with a 101-10.

In the pole vault, California junior Ashley Sommerer was victorious at a height of 10-00. Sophomore Trinity Higgins was a close second with a 9-06.

Elsewhere in the field, Ellie Wirts took second in the long jump with a mark of 15-04.5. Wirts was fifth in the triple jump with a 29-10.5.

Quinn Albertson was second in the javelin, with a throw of 95-05, and Allison Bailey scored fifth in the high jump with a 4-06.

In the sprints, the Lady Pintos had a nice showing in the 200-meter-dash, as Wirts took third with a time of 28.65 while Jocelyn Wells was fourth with a 28.87.

Wirts was also fourth in the 400-meter-dash with a time of 1:05.82, finishing just behind Tipton's Jana Harrison, who took third with a 1:04.29.

In the 100-meter-dash, Wells placed fourth with a 13.79 while Tipton's Tyanna Busch was fifth with a time of 13.88.

The Lady Pintos had a pair of third-place finishers in the distance events as Grace Henley was third in the 1600-meter-run with a 6:26.51 while Karly Wolfe took third in the 3200-meter-run with a time of 14:55.18.

In the 100-meter-hurdles, California's Cora Kuykendall was second with a time of 17.10 while Higgins took fifth with an 18.03. Tipton's Abby Backes was the top area finisher in the 300-meter-hurdles, taking fifth with a time of 54.16.

In relay action, the 4x200-meter-relay was all Moniteau County as California took first with a 1:55.13 while Tipton was second at a time of 1:57.65. The Lady Pintos' winning team consisted of Bailey, Wells, Makayla Schanzmeyer and McKala Alber, while the Lady Cardinals had the foursome of Harrison, Busch, McKenzie Embry and Ella Claas.

Harrison, Busch, Embry and Claas also teamed up to give Tipton a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter-relay with a time of 54.98.

The Lady Pintos earned third-place in the 4x800-meter-relay with a 12:41.20 behind the team of Wolfe, Henley, Wells and Kendall Kirksey. California was fourth in the 4x400-meter-relay as Bailey, Alber, Schanzmeyer and Brooklyn Bax teamed up for a time of 4:31.86.

On the boys side, California's team score of 112 was bested by Southern Boone's winning point total of 125. Versailles finished just behind the Pintos with a score of 111 while New Bloomfield was fourth with a 105. Tipton came in fifth with 90 points, North Callaway had 84 to take sixth, Boonville was seventh with 52 and Green Ridge rounded out the team scoring with a 46.

The 1600-meter-run went down to the wire as Tipton's Isaac Ashton edged California's Hunter Carpenter. Ashton won with a time of 4:41.26 while Carpenter's time was 4:44.34.

Ashton went on to win the 3200-meter-run, as well with a time of 10:49.47. The Pintos had two in the top five as Caden Kirksey was third with a time of 11:22.87 and Trevor Porter placed fifth with an 11:47.

California's Nyson Moore was the top area sprinter, taking fifth in the 100-meter-dash with an 11.88. Tipton's Kodie Dick took fifth in the 400-meter-dash with a time of 55.02.

The Pintos went 1-2 in the 300-meter-hurdles as Isaac Ash took first with a time of 44.10 while Alex Meisenheimer was second with a 44.82.

Tipton's 4x800-meter-relay team was victorious as Ashton, Dick, Dalton Weaver and Macen Mannering teamed up for a time of 9:00.36.

In the 4x400-meter-relay, the Pintos edged the Cardinals to take third with a time of 3:42.57 behind the team of Carpenter, Ash, Meisenheimer and Cory Friedmeyer.

California also narrowly finished third in the 4x200-meter-relay as Ash, Meisenheimer, Moore and Toby Dalbey teamed up for a time of 1:38.61.

In the 4x100-meter-relay, the area foes swapped places as Tipton edged the Pintos to take third with a time of 46.80. Dakota Pace, Dylan Becker, Preston Burnett and Tyler Pierson made up the Cardinals' 4x100 team.

In the field, California had a strong showing in the pole vault, as Friedmeyer won with a height of 12-00 while Dylan Vines finished third with a 9-06. Friedmeyer was also third in the javelin with a throw of 131-10.

Tipton, meanwhile, had two top-four finishers in the long jump as Becker won with a mark of 21-01.25 while Pace took fourth with a 19-10.75. In the triple jump, Ash took second with a mark of 40-04.75 . He also took fourth in the high jump with a 5-04.

The discus saw three area throwers in the top five as California's Nathan Pickering was third with a 122-02.5 and Tipton's Tucker Petree and Quinton Griggs took fourth and fifth, respectively. Pickering also took fifth in the shot put with a mark of 38-08.25.
