California athletic teams take precautions during summer activities

Following a lost spring season due to the coronavirus pandemic, some Pintos athletes will get the chance to practice together throughout the summer.

Multiple California athletic teams have activities going on during the summer. California Athletic Director Rick Edwards said the school has some guidelines on how the teams can proceed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Edwards said the coaches have a list of questions they have to ask the athletes about, including if they have experienced any symptoms of COVID-19. The teams also take the temperatures of the athletes to see if they have a fever.

"(The coaches) ask athletes about the symptoms the CDC gave us, which is shortness of breath or difficulty breathing," Edwards said. "Then we take their temperature, so if they have a fever of 100.4 or over we send them home. We ask them if they have chills, muscle pains not caused by the practices, sore throat, or new loss of taste or smell."

Players have to wash their hands with soap and warm water, and Edwards said they can also use hand sanitizer that is 60 percent alcohol or more.

Edwards said the school is not letting players use locker rooms and the players have to come to practice dressed and ready to go. Athletes also need to have their own water bottles.

"We are keeping (the athletes) spaced out as best we can," Edwards said.
