Jamestown off to early success in fall ball

The Jamestown Eagles baseball team is off to a fast start for the fall season, as it is now 6-1 on the year.

Head coach Cody Stegemann said he has seen amazing effort from the team so far.

“So far, I have seen from my team an amazing effort to improve themselves individually and as a team,” Stegemann said. “Every practice and game, we have guys that are constantly working to get better, and not only themselves but their teammates. They are also just going out there and having fun and letting the game come to them.”

Multiple players on the team are having a big impact on the team’s play.

“So far, I would say Mack Sorrells and Bradley Schoenthal have been helping our offense with their bats,” Stegemann said. “I have to give credit to our starting pitchers Gage Reynolds, Mack Sorrells, Shayne Harlan and Evan Schoenthal. They have come in and done a great job filling up the zone and trusting their defense. Also, our seniors Tristan Jones, Mack Sorrells and Cole Higgins have been great leaders for our team. I want to include all our players because they have worked hard for me and for each other.”

The Eagles have had plenty of success on offense, as they scored more than 10 runs in four of their seven games so far. The Eagles also scored 20 runs twice in back-to-back games. The first was Sept. 15 in a 20-9 win over Iberia and the second was Sept. 21 in a 20-18 win over Eugene.

Patience at the plate is a big reason why the team has had such success so far, Stegemann said.

“Some keys to our offense right now are patience at the plate, working counts and being selective,” Stegemann said. “Our situational hitting has been stellar as well. Our lineup one through nine and even some reserves have taken each at-bat as serious as the next one, no matter what the score. Also, in practice we don’t just go through the motions. We take every drill seriously, and we are always trying to find new ways to better ourselves and our teammates.”

As the fall season goes on, Stegemann said he would like to see more improvement from the team in every aspect of the game and to keep growing as a team.

“I also want our team to keep growing our chemistry and to have fun,” Stegemann said. “Our goal, though, is to get back to the conference championship and make it home with a win.”

The team’s next game is at 6:30 p.m Oct. 1 against Higbee (2-3).
