Jamestown baseball aims to be in true form by midseason

The Jamestown Eagles baseball team is getting ready for the upcoming spring season.

While the team’s season last year was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Eagles were able to play their most recent fall season, where they went 9-2 and won the conference fall tournament. Head coach Cody Stegemann said the fall season helps them prepare for the spring.

“It was a pretty successful season and a lot of the guys who play spring play in the fall,” Stegemann said. “So I think having a fall season comes into a huge effect to get the players ready for a regular season and how things are going to work as well.”

One of the goals Stegemann has for the team this season is for the players to help each other and work on their chemistry.

“Chemistry is huge on our team,” Stegemann said. “We make sure that guys gets along, and that if a guy is not doing something right or is down on one day, that we pick each other up. Our goal this year is to play as one team.”

Stegemann said other goals include winning conference and a district championship.

In the early parts of the season, Stegemann said staying healthy is going to be something the team focuses on. Another area the team is focusing on is its pitching. Stegemann said Jamestown’s players have been putting in the work during the offseason to make that happen.

“Coming out of basketball and not playing since the fall, we are trying to stay healthy,” Stegemann said. “We’ve got some new arms.”

As the season goes along and the team reaches the middle and late parts of the year, Stegemann said he wants to see the players work on all the little aspects of the game. Stegemann also said the team does a good job of taking every drill during every practice very seriously.

“I want to see improvement on every aspect that they go through,” Stegemann said. “My team does a great job of taking every day serious and getting better every day. (By) midseason, I hope that we just stick to it and improve every day, and hopefully by midseason, we are in true form and we can win some games.”
