Maurice Earl Johnson

Maurice Earl Johnson, age 92, of Overland Park, Kan., passed way Monday, March 8, 2021, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was born on March 5, 1929, in Jamestown, Missouri, the second of two children of Nugent and Edna (Hunziker) Johnson. Maurice attended Paseo High School, starring in basketball, and graduating in 1947. After high school, Maurice started college, served two years in the Army, then resumed his studies at Missouri University, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1955, followed by a Master's degree in Education from Central Missouri State in 1958. In 1955 he married Shirley How and was married for 64 years. They settled in Independence, Missouri, where Maurice taught English and Social Studies. Maurice and Shirley had one son, Mark Johnson, and three grandchildren. Maurice is survived by his son, Mark Johnson, Mark's wife Mary Johnson, and his grandchildren, Megan, Chelsea, and Levi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Johnson, and his sister, Charlotte Johnson. A Visitation will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City. We will be celebrating the lives of Shirley and Maurice at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Committal will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Mount Moriah Cemetery.
