Melvin Harris, age 83, of California, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011, at the Moniteau Care Center, California.

He was born October 24, 1927, in Jefferson City, the son of William I. and Minnie Ousley Harris, both of whom preceded him in death.

Melvin graduated from Jefferson City High School.

He was united in marriage on January 10, 1948, in California, to Verna Sanders, who also preceded him in death.

Melvin served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He attended Lebanon Baptist Church in McGirk. He retired from California Manufacturing Company after 40 years of service. He then enjoyed working at Wal-Mart for the next 15 years.

Melvin enjoyed spending time with family and friends and will be sadly missed.

Survivors include: three sons, Bobby J. Bond with his wife Maria of Linn Creek, Gary W. Harris with his wife Janice of California, and Danny J. Harris and his wife June of Jefferson City; two daughters, Rosa Lee Schnieders of California, and Melva J. Anderson with her husband Richard of California; one twin brother, Marvin J. Harris with his wife Dorothy of Jefferson City; one sister, Dorothy Yengiues with her husband Paul of Maryland Heights; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Aaron Schnieders; one brother, Joe Harris; and one sister, Francis Harris.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 20, 2011, at Lebanon Baptist Church, McGirk, with Rev. Scott Spurling officiating. Burial was in the Elston Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weber Funeral Home in California.
