California High School Speech Team Finishes Season at Moberly Spartan Invitational

The CHS Speech Team and Coach Tiffany Brown competed in their final meet of the season at the Moberly Spartan Invitational Speech Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 19. Nineteen CHS students participated in nine events, with 26 total entries

"It was a great experience, and I would definitely do it again," said Haylee Holmes, junior.

The following students received medals in their categories: Ashlee Davis-5th of 57 in Prose,

Lesa Langlotz-5th of 41 in Radio, Rebecca Suen-5th of 49 in Prose, Drake Farris and Margret Mace-5th of 42 in Improvisational Duet Acting, Mitchell Cox and Sarah Couchman-6th of 42 in Improvisational Duet Acting.

Mace, who medaled in Improvisational Duet Acting with partner Farris, had never competed in the event before and agreed to participate only 15 minutes before the tournament started when the team learned that Farris's partner was unable to attend the meet.

"The students did a fabulous job of supporting each other at the tournament by helping members practice in the cafeteria before the rounds began and cheering each other on during the competition," said Brown.

Eight students, including finalist Lesa Langlotz, were first time competitors.

"Competition was definitely tough this time, and the students had to really fight to make it to finals. We were facing some large and highly competitive schools from multiple districts," added Brown.

CHS students competed as follows: Kassi Meisenheimer, Maria Banda, and Rebecca Suen in Poetry; Ashlee Davis, Kelci Dampf, and Rebecca Suen in Prose; Kassi Meisenheimer, Maria Banda, and Jessica McKenzie in Humorous Interpretation; Kassi Meisenheimer and Maria Banda in Dramatic Interpretation; Noel Sandoval, Kelci Dampf, and Sarah Couchman in Storytelling; Lesa Langlotz, Jordan Brizendine, and Jayme Reynolds in Radio; Ashlee Davis and Sidney Williams in Original Oratory; Rebecca Suen and Margret Mace, Nathanial Caudel and Mitchell Cox, and Ashlee Davis and Sarah Couchman in Duet Acting; and Drake Farris and Margret Mace, Sarah Couchman and Mitchell Cox, and Eligio Banda, Haylee Holmes and Nathan Burkett and Kristen Nathanial Caudel in Improvisational Duet Acting.
