California School Board hears request for band trip

The California R-I School Board heard a request for a trip for the band in its meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the high school media room.

Band Director Matt Rayl presented the information to the board about the selection of Wisconsin Dells as the destination of the trip. The trip is being tailored for the band, with visits to local sites and performance of a concert. The bus will travel all night and set up two concert dates at a theme park. The consensus of the board was to go ahead with the planning.

In other business, Boy Scout Alexx Lewis appeared before the board to request approval for a proposed Eagle Scout project.

Basically, the proposed project is to develop a single school mascot design, so flags, posters, etc., would all have the same mascot on the logo. The image of the California Pinto used at the school has changed shapes, designs and colors with the various classes through the years.

Included in the project is the development of a school flag. The board consensus was for Lewis to go ahead with the project.

In reports of the first month of classes, Elementary Principal Terri Steffes reported a smooth opening for the 2011-12 school year. The new opening time is 7 a.m., with about 15 students arriving. A much larger group arrives about 7:15 a.m., with breakfast starting between 7:10 and 7:15. The bus students arrive about 7:30 and breakfast is completed at 7:45.

The enrollment was given as 571, but she reported five more students enrolled just before the board meeting.
