The severity of the drought has been detrimental to yards and gardens across the state. The economic impact to crops and the response needed to protect livestock is justifiably getting most of the attention. But over the next few months to a year, many individuals will be trying to amend some of the damages to their landscaping.
The California R-I School Board did a walk-through on Wednesday, Aug. 15, of the district's elementary, middle and high school facilities before meeting at the high school library-media room. The Tax Levy Rate Hearing was held first, followed by the regular meeting. For more on this meeting see the Aug. 22 issue of the California Democrat.

The Moniteau County Fair Baby Show drew approximately 70 entrants Saturday at the main arena of the fairgrounds, California, where milder temperatures and a nice breeze made for a much more pleasant evening for the event than in previous years.
The "Loop O Plane" ride in service at the 146th Annual Moniteau County Fair is celebrating its 50th year of service providing enjoyment and thrills for riders of all ages.

Bailey Glenn, daughter of Steve and Kristie Glenn, California, ended her reign as the 2011 Miss Moniteau County Queen Tuesday night at the Moniteau County Fair, California, as she passed her crown on to Caitlin Meyer at the 2012 Miss Moniteau County contest.
The 2012 Miss Moniteau County Queen contest was held Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the main arena of the Moniteau County Fairgrounds, California, where 2011 Miss Moniteau County Queen Bailey Glenn passed her title and crown on to Caitlin Meyer, daughter of David and Rhonda Meyer, California.
A total of 53 area youth ages 3-5, including 31 girls and 22 boys, participated in the 2012 Little Mr. and Miss Moniteau County contest Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the main arena of the Moniteau County Fairgrounds, California, where judges ultimately chose Corbin Lawson, 4, and Addison Harris, 5, to wear the crowns.
After a hard-fought and at times heated campaign, incumbent Sheriff Jeptha "Jay" Gump defeated challengers Tony Wheatley, Dale Embry and Chris Dunham on the Republican ticket in the primary election held Tuesday, Aug. 8. Turnout was 33.77 percent.
