Pintos defeat Cole Camp with last-second 3-pointer by Gump

The California Pintos were on the road Tuesday, Dec. 4, where the varsity came from behind to defeat Cole Camp 51-48 thanks to a 3-pointer by Austin Gump with just 2.5 seconds to play.

"We were fortunate to win," California Head Coach Blair Scanlon said. "We were down by 10 at the half, then we made a run to tie it up at 48-48. Austin Gump made that 3-pointer with under four seconds to play. We didn't play real well and Cole Camp is a much improved team."

California led 7-6 after one quarter, however, Cole Camp went on a 17-3 run in the second quarter to pull ahead 28-18 at the half. The Pintos turned up the heat in the third quarter to outscore the Bluebirds 17-10 including a big 3-pointer by Jaden Barr with four seconds remaining to close the gap for the Pintos, who trailed 38-35 going into the final frame. California went on to outscore Cole Camp 16-10 in the fourth to secure the win.

Barr led California with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Dylan Albertson followed with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Curtis Lehman added seven points. Chase Ramsdell and Gump each contributed four points.

The Pintos traveled to Eugene Friday, where the varsity lost a close contest to the Eagles 55-49.

California led early in the first quarter, however, Eugene went on a 6-0 run to lead 12-11 at the end of the first frame. The Eagles led 22-21 at the half and 33-31 going into the final quarter.

"I thought we outplayed Eugene," Scanlon said. "But we had 20 turnovers that hurt us and Eugene made their free throws down the stretch. They hit 12 of 14 in the last quarter. We played solid defense, but there are just little things we need to correct."

Barr led California (3-2) with 22 points and three assists, followed by Ramsdell and Lehman with 10 each. Lehman led Pinto rebounds with eight and Ramsdell followed with seven.

Eugene was led by Tyler Kempker with 17 points, followed by Cody Shaw with 14.
