The California High School math team competed in Camdenton Saturday, Jan. 14.
Overall, California tied with Smith-Cotton for third place. Both the freshman and sophomore teams took second, while the junior and senior teams took fourth. Alex Davis was named third place top sophomore and Addison Jobe was named third place top senior.
Despite not having members to compete in every single category, Coach Peggy Huhmann said that considering we compete with schools much larger than California, we are doing very well.
Fifteen schools competed; the competition was divided into two divisions according to the size of the school. California was in Division II with School of the Osage, Excelsior Springs, Louisburg, Smith-Cotton, Fair Grove and Warsaw.
A typical math contest has several different categories including Algebra, Geometry, Computation and Word Problems. These categories are sectioned into grade level as well as an open competition.
According to which divisions they are in, the Math Team members are divided into rooms of about 25 students where they take tests. These tests are then scored to determine the awards.
"The students really enjoy math team. I like the relaxed feel the team has about winning or losing," said sophomore Alex Davis, It's pretty awesome.
