California nets win against Osage

The California High School volleyball teams hosted Osage Thursday night, where the varsity, JVA and JVB teams captured wins from the Lady Indians.

California's varsity defeated Osage 25-18 and 25-23.

"The girls are starting to come together and play well at the right time of the year," California Coach Julie Bailey said. "We lost to Osage in a tourney earlier in the year and we were able to beat them now, so I am proud of all of the girls."

Paige Halsey led the Lady Pintos with 11 kills and two blocks. Caitlin Meyer had four kills, one ace and 13 digs. Adrienne Strickfaden and Cameron Meyer each had five kills and one block. Madilyn Safley had 14 assists and four digs. Abby Lueckenotte had 11 assists and three digs, and Kayla Allison had 12 digs.

California's JVA defeated Osage 25-19, 21-25 and 25-22.

"Due to injuries, a different mix of girls played," California Coach Sarah Hays said. "They worked hard and got the win. I have had a blast and love coaching these girls."

Cassie Dearixon led California with five kills, 20 digs and three aces. Monica Whitson followed with nine assists, five kills, seven digs and two aces. Emma BAiley had four assists, four kills and one ace. Lindsey Morris had two kills and 12 digs. Jasmine Wells chipped in with 15 digs.

California's JVB defeated Osage 25-18 and 25-18.

"This was a fantastic game," California Coach Maggie Long said. "The girls came out ready to play and worked extremely hard. We got some awesome kills and digs. It's been such a pleasure coaching this team. It's been a winning season."

Claire Kuhlman led California with seven digs and five kills. Carlie Bleich had five assists, six digs and one ace. Kelly Sommerer had five assists, one kill, three digs and one ace. Leanna Reichel had six digs, three kills and one ace. Ellie Wirts had 13 digs, and Roz Martensen had three kills, three digs and one assist.

The Lady Pintos traveled to Westphalia Oct. 15, where California's varsity suffered a loss to the Lady Comets, 13-25 and 20-25.

"Two of our starters were out due to injury, but the girls came together as a team to give Fatima a tough game," Bailey said. "I'm very proud of how well we played."

Caitlin Meyer had seven digs, three kills and one ace. Safley had seven assists and eight digs. Lueckenotte had six digs and four assists. Halsey had two kills and two blocks. Allison had seven digs and one ace. Cameron Meyer chipped in with three kills.

California's JVA lost to Fatima 16-25 and 17-25.

Dearixon led California with six kills, five digs and one assist. Wells had two kills and five digs. Bailey had five assists, one kill and four digs, and Whitson had two assists and one kill. Wirts chipped in with five digs.

California's JVB lost to the Lady Comets 25-20, 13-25 and 14-25.

"Even though we lost, the girls played awesome," Coach Long said. "Ellie Wirts did an especially great job in the back row and Carlie Bleich had a wonderful game."

Bleich had four assists, one kill, eight digs and two aces. Kuhlman had 15 digs, one ace and two kills. Martensen had two kills, six digs and one block. Sommerer had six assists, one kill, four digs and one ace. Wirts had 10 digs, Reichel had one kill, seven digs and two aces, and Madison Pierson had three kills, one dig and one block.

California hosted Smith-Cotton Monday night, which was Senior Night, where the varsity Lady Pintos lost a hard-fought match to the Lady Tigers 26-24, 20-25 and 14-25.

Prior to the varsity match, seniors Sydney Deeken, Abby Lueckenotte, Libby Martin and Caitlin Meyer, along with their parents, were recognized via a special ceremony.

California's JVA lost 17-25 and 27-29. The JVB Lady Pintos defeated Smith-Cotton 25-14 and 25-9.

California's varsity will play Russellville at 6:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, in the first round of the Class 2 District 7 Volleyball Tournament at Fatima High School, Westphalia. The championship game is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29.
