California first graders celebrate annual Thanksgiving Feast

The first graders of California elementary School commemorated the origins of Thanksgiving in big, and really tasty, way Wednesday, Nov. 25. The big event was held in the elementary multi-purpose room.

The Thanksgiving Feast has been going on for many years, and has been a teaching tool helping the young people learn about what is known as the First Thanksgiving, a dinner with Pilgrims and Indians dining together.

In preparation for the big feast, the students in art class, taught by Dana Lee, check out pictures of both groups to learn about who they will be representing at the special feast, and learn how both groups made their own clothes. They learn especially about weaving, which was important to both groups. Lee said the students read books which tell about both.

The classes split off, choosing to be either Indians or Pilgrims and dressing the part with the help of Lee, who makes Pilgrim bonnets and hats, and Indian headbands and necklaces.

The Thanksgiving Feast turkey was provided by Burgers' Smokehouse, the mashed potatoes by the school and corn, green beans and rolls provided by the parents. Juice and milk finished out the all-you-can-eat meal. Teachers, administrators, parents and cooks, serve, assist and supervise.
