To help get 2015 started on a positive note, the Democrat will introduce a new, weekly feature that allows community members to become directly involved with the paper's sports coverage.

Beginning Jan. 7, the Democrat sports section will include a "Photo of the Week" each Wednesday. Readers are encouraged to submit nominations to [email protected].

The submissions should be sports-related, such as: a player dunking at a boys basketball game; a lively student section at a girls basketball game; or a coach giving their players a "heated" pep talk.

Photos also can be humorous, exciting or sad moments (with an athletic theme). Maybe a California fan made their pet dog a Pintos sweatshirt to wear outside? Maybe a Tipton fan hangs a Cardinals flag above their dinner table? Maybe a Jamestown fan has their 9-month old grandson wearing an Eagles shirt?

While more recent photos are encouraged, an older photo showing a current athlete will get consideration. For example, a Russellville senior may be pictured holding a basketball and wearing an Indians shirt at age 4.

Whatever the situation, the Democrat welcomes all submissions. Each week, the best photo - or photos - will be selected for the sports section. Please remember to include all relevant details with the submission: names, dates, location, context, ect.

To be considered for the paper that current week, submissions must be received by 2 p.m. Monday.
