With three swim meets left on the schedule, the California Stingrays hosted a meet with Centralia, Eldon and Fulton Wednesday, July 1, but the meet was called off halfway through due to severe weather. Only 36 of the 82 events were completed, and the rest of the events will not be made up.

Bentonville’s Sydney Thurow, left, talks with Shanna Seyfarth before signing to play college volleyball Wednesday at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Bentonville. Thurow, a middle hitter who finished the season with 195 kills, will play at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. Seyfarth, a libero, will play at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kan. Seyfarth led the team with 326 digs. Both were All-State selections and Seyfarth was picked for this summer’s All-Star game. The pair helped Bentonville win state titles in 2007 and 2008 and advanced to the state semifinals this season.

"We're getting towards the end of the season," first-year California head coach Jamie Johnson said. "Usually we see our kids peek about this time. This is the time of the season that's really fun because our kids are usually doing better and seeing a little progress."

Starting in May, the Stingrays have been competing in meets as part of the Mid-Missouri Swim Conference. The season concludes Saturday as California will host the conference championship in Boonville. But before that, the Stingrays will travel to Boonville today to swim against Boonville, Eldon, Fayette, Fulton and Sedalia.

"We're really looking forward to the championship," Johnson said. "It's always a really fun day. I think all the kids have a really good time and really enjoying swimming."

Scores aren't kept at the championship meet, but it's optional at regular swim meets. Johnson says they still don't keep scores, but they keep individual times and records.

"The kids just try to better their own times," Johnson said. "It's more about personal development for each of the swimmers."

On the Stingrays, ages vary from four-years-old to 17. Johnson knows it's hard for older swimmers to participate, due to other sports camps, but she works around their busy schedule by having early morning training sessions.

"If they want to do it, they can," Johnson said. "Right now we have a good group of high school kids that are still swimming. I think they'll keep up with it for a couple more years."

Below are the complete results for the Stingrays only.
